Day trips

Tarragona as a day trip from Barcelona

Tarragona was Tarraco, one of the main cities of Roman Hispania, and its amphitheatre by the sea, walls and old town are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is about 100 km south-west of Barcelona, close enough for a day, and the train you choose decides whether you arrive in the city or outside it.

Regional train or high-speed train?

Three regional lines of Rodalies de Catalunya run from Barcelona to Tarragona station, which is in the city, below the old town and next to the sea: the R14 towards Lleida, the R15 towards Riba-roja d’Ebre and the R16 towards Tortosa. All three stop at Barcelona Sants; the R14 and R16 also stop at Passeig de Gràcia. Together they give a reasonable spread of departures through the day.

High-speed trains do not stop at Tarragona station but at Camp de Tarragona, a separate station outside the city, so you need onward transport into the centre. For a day spent among the Roman remains, the regional train is usually the more practical choice. Look up current times on the Rodalies timetable.

What you come to see

The Archaeological Ensemble of Tárraco was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. It brings together remains spread across the city: the amphitheatre beside the beach, the Roman circus, the walls around the old town and other sites in and around Tarragona. The cathedral and the medieval streets of the Part Alta sit on top of the Roman city.

The old town is compact but hilly, with steps between the seafront and the upper streets. Comfortable shoes matter more than in Barcelona, and in summer the midday heat on the stone is strong: start early or plan the climb for late afternoon.

Tips for the day

  • Check the last regional train back before you set off; evening services are less frequent than daytime ones.
  • Opening days and tickets differ from one Roman site to another: check them before you plan the route through the city.
  • If you are travelling with a pushchair or someone with limited mobility, plan the route through the old town around its steps and slopes.
  • Planning more day trips? See Sitges, on the same coast, and PortAventura, a little further south.

With a driver: when it makes sense

A private car with a driver takes you from your hotel to the edge of the old town and back when you choose, and can add a second stop, such as Sitges, on the way. QuickPickups, which publishes this guide, sells this service; its booking box is clearly marked on this page. The driver is not an official guide, and tickets for the Roman sites are not included.

It makes most sense for families with young children, groups who would otherwise split across trains, travellers with limited mobility, and anyone who wants to set their own timetable for the day.
