A day trip to Sitges from Barcelona

Sitges is the seaside town most visitors pick for a day out of Barcelona: beaches, a whitewashed old town and a long seafront promenade, south-west along the Garraf coast. Getting there is simple by train; it gets more interesting if you are coming straight from the airport.

Where Sitges is

Sitges lies on the coast south-west of Barcelona, beyond the Garraf massif, and is closer to the airport than to the city centre. The train runs along the cliffs of the Garraf coast, which is part of the appeal of the trip. By road there are two routes: the motorway and tunnels inland, which are quicker, and the winding coast road through the Garraf, which is slower but scenic.

By train from Barcelona: R2 Sud

The R2 Sud, known as the Garraf line, runs from Barcelona to Sant Vicenç de Calders and stops at Barcelona-Sants, Passeig de Gràcia, Estació de França and Sitges. Rodalies de Catalunya lists a train every 15 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes off-peak on weekdays on the Sant Vicenç route, with additional trains on the shorter Vilanova i la Geltrú route, which also stops in Sitges.

Check the timetable for weekends and your return train. The station in Sitges is a short walk from the old town and the beaches. On summer weekends the trains back to Barcelona in the early evening are busy, so it is worth leaving a little earlier or later than the crowd.

From the airport

There is no direct train from the airport to Sitges. The R2 Nord from Terminal 2 runs towards Barcelona; you can change at El Prat de Llobregat to an R2 Sud train heading south, or ride into Sants and change there. Both need two trains, and the R2 Nord itself runs about every 30 minutes, according to Rodalies. From Terminal 1, add the free shuttle bus to T2.

By road the airport is the closer starting point: Sitges is about 30 km away, typically a 25- to 35-minute drive. This is one of the situations where travelling by road, by taxi or with a booked driver, is clearly quicker than public transport, especially with luggage.

Driving

Driving gives you the freedom to stop at the Garraf coves or continue to Vilanova i la Geltrú. The main limitation is parking in Sitges on summer weekends, when spaces near the seafront fill up early and paid car parks are the practical choice. The coast road through the Garraf massif is narrow and winding; the motorway route is quicker and may involve tolls depending on the section, so check before you set off.

With a driver

A private car with a driver makes sense mainly in three cases: when you are going straight from the airport to a hotel in Sitges with luggage, when a family or group wants to travel together without changing trains, and for an evening return after the last convenient train. QuickPickups, which publishes this guide, sells this service; its booking box is marked on this page. For a day trip with a return, send your times by phone or WhatsApp so both legs can be arranged.

Train or road: how to choose

For a day trip from central Barcelona, the train is hard to beat. It is frequent, there are no changes from Sants, Passeig de Gràcia or Estació de França, it runs along the coast, and it leaves you a short walk from the beach. You also avoid looking for parking in Sitges, which on a summer weekend can take longer than the journey itself.

Road makes more sense in a few situations: when you are coming from the airport or going there, when you are carrying luggage because you are staying in Sitges, when you are a group of four or more and want to travel together, and when you want to stop along the Garraf coast or continue to other towns on the way. It is also the more practical choice late in the evening, after the trains thin out.

Staying in Sitges and flying from Barcelona

Many visitors stay in Sitges and use Barcelona airport, which is closer to Sitges than the city centre is. On your departure day, remember that the train journey to the airport means a change and, for Terminal 1, the shuttle bus as well, so allow plenty of time with luggage. Check your terminal in advance using our guide to T1 and T2, and look at the first trains on the Rodalies timetable if your flight is early: before the first train, the road is the only way.

Tips for the day

  • Go on a weekday if you can; summer weekends are busy on the trains and the beaches.
  • For the old town and the church on the headland, walk from the station towards the sea; the main beaches are on either side.
  • Check the time of your last train back before you set off, especially on Sundays and public holidays.
  • Other day trips: Montserrat for the mountains, Girona for a historic city.
