Trains

Barcelona Sants to the airport

Sants is Barcelona’s main railway station, where high-speed, long-distance and regional trains arrive. If you are connecting to or from a flight, there is one direct train to the airport and several other ways to make the trip. Which is best depends mostly on your terminal.

The short answer

If your flight leaves from Terminal 2, the R2 Nord train from Sants is the most direct public option: no changes and a station next to the terminal. If it leaves from Terminal 1, the train still works but you will need the free shuttle bus from T2, so the metro or the road become more attractive. Note that the Aerobús does not stop at Sants: according to Aerobús, none of its lines serve Barcelona-Sants or Barcelona Nord.

Rodalies R2 Nord: the direct train

The R2 Nord commuter line runs between the airport and Sant Celoni or Maçanet-Massanes, calling at Barcelona-Sants and Passeig de Gràcia. Rodalies de Catalunya lists one train every 30 minutes on the airport branch, and the airport station is next to Terminal 2, on the ground floor according to Aena.

Practical points at Sants: the commuter platforms are on the lower level of the station, and the departure boards show the R2 Nord to “Aeroport”. Because trains are half an hour apart, check the Rodalies timetable before you leave your hotel, especially early in the morning or late at night: the line does not run overnight. If you have just arrived on a long-distance train, your ticket may include a free connection on Rodalies; check the conditions on your ticket.

For Terminal 1, get off at the airport station and take the free shuttle bus from T2. Aena times the T2-to-T1 run at 14 minutes, with buses every 5 to 10 minutes depending on the time of day.

Metro: L5 and L9 Sud

Sants Estació is on metro L3 and L5. The simplest route to the airport is L5 to Collblanc, two stops, and then L9 Sud to Aeroport T1 or Aeroport T2. TMB gives about half an hour on L9 Sud, with a train roughly every 7 minutes, which makes it a good option for T1 in particular.

Ticket rules are what catch travellers out. At the airport stations the single ticket, the T-casual and the T-grup are not valid: you need the Airport ticket or a Hola Barcelona card. The interchange at Collblanc involves corridors and escalators, so it is manageable with a suitcase or two but slow with more.

Taxi from Sants

There is a taxi rank outside Sants station. The AMB applies a €2.55 supplement to journeys that start at Sants, on top of the metered fare (€1.35 per km on weekdays from 8:00 to 20:00, €1.66 per km at night, on Saturdays and on public holidays) and the €4.60 airport supplement. The journey is short and mostly on the ring road, so it is often quicker than the train for Terminal 1.

When several long-distance trains arrive at once, there can be a queue at the rank. For more than four people you will need a larger vehicle, which carries a further supplement under the AMB rules.

Private transfer from Sants

A pre-booked transfer means the driver is waiting for your train at Sants and takes you to your terminal at a price agreed in advance. QuickPickups, which publishes this guide, sells this service and its booking box is marked on this page. It makes the most sense for:

  • families and groups who want one vehicle for everyone;
  • travellers changing from a long-distance train to a flight with plenty of luggage;
  • early-morning flights, when the first train may be too late;
  • business travellers who need an invoice and a set price.

From the airport to Sants

In the other direction the logic is the same. From T2, take the R2 Nord towards Sant Celoni or Maçanet-Massanes and get off at Barcelona-Sants. From T1, either take the shuttle to T2 first or take L9 Sud to Collblanc and change to L5 for Sants Estació. If you are catching a high-speed train, leave a margin: some services have security checks and boarding closes before departure. See every option from the airport to the centre for the wider picture.

How much time to leave

  • Train to T2: allow for up to 30 minutes of waiting if you just miss one, plus about 20 minutes on board.
  • Train to T1: add 15 to 20 minutes for the shuttle bus and the walk.
  • Metro: 40 to 50 minutes door to platform, more with luggage.
  • By road: 20 to 30 minutes, more at rush hour.

Then add your airline’s recommended time at the airport. Not sure which terminal you need? Our T1 vs T2 guide explains how to check.
