Getting around

How to get to Montjuïc

Montjuïc is the green hill between the port and Plaça d’Espanya, with the castle, the gardens, museums and some of the best views of the city. Getting up is a small journey in itself: a funicular inside the metro, a cable car over the trees, a bus or a steep walk.

Check frequencies and current timetables with TMB before you go: the cable car and the funicular close for an annual technical inspection, usually in winter, and TMB publishes the alternative service when they do.

Metro and funicular from Paral·lel

The Montjuïc funicular starts inside Paral·lel metro station, where lines L2 and L3 stop, and climbs in a tunnel to Parc de Montjuïc station on Avinguda de Miramar. It is part of the TMB network: according to TMB’s fares page, the single ticket is valid for one journey on the metro, the bus or the Montjuïc funicular. For travel cards, see our guide to metro and bus tickets.

At the top you are close to the Miramar viewpoint, the gardens and the Fundació Joan Miró, and right next to the lower station of the cable car.

The cable car to the castle

The Telefèric de Montjuïc is a 752-metre ride, according to TMB, from Parc de Montjuïc station, next to the funicular, up to the castle. It has its own ticket, sold separately from metro and bus tickets; check prices and opening times with the operator. TMB lists buses 50 and 55 as stopping at the cable car, and describes its tourist transport, cable car and funicular included, as accessible for people with reduced mobility.

By bus or on foot from Plaça d’Espanya

Plaça d’Espanya is served by metro lines L1 and L3, by FGC trains and by the Aerobús. From the square, the 150 bus climbs Montjuïc to the castle; check its stops and timetable on the TMB map. On foot, the avenue behind the Venetian towers leads up past the fountains to the National Art Museum of Catalonia, with escalators along part of the way; from there to the castle it is a long walk uphill.

With a driver: when it makes sense

Montjuïc is spread out, and moving between the castle, the viewpoints and the museums takes time without a car. A car with a driver takes you up and between the stops and waits at each one. QuickPickups, which publishes this guide, sells this service; its booking box is marked on this page. Our viewpoints route by car combines Montjuïc with the Bunkers del Carmel and Tibidabo, and you can choose your own stops with a driver by the hour. The driver is not an official guide, and museum tickets are not included.

Tips for the day

  • Go up by funicular or cable car and walk down through the gardens: it is easier in that direction.
  • Sunset is the busiest time at the viewpoints; arrive early if you want a spot.
  • Major concerts and events on Montjuïc change bus services and traffic; check TMB on event days.
  • Want more views? See how to get to Tibidabo and Park Güell.
