Day trips

Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum from Barcelona

Salvador Dalí’s home town sits about 140 km north-east of Barcelona, and his Theatre-Museum is the reason most visitors make the journey. The trip is easy by train, but Figueres has two stations, and which one you arrive at decides how long the walk to the museum is.

Two stations, two kinds of train

High-speed trains from Barcelona Sants stop at Figueres-Vilafant, a station outside the town centre, so you need a local bus, a taxi or a walk to reach the museum. The regional R11 line of Rodalies de Catalunya runs from Sants and Passeig de Gràcia via Girona to Figueres station, which is in the town itself. The regional train is slower; the high-speed train is quicker but leaves you further out.

Departure times and journey times change with the timetable, so check them on Renfe and the Rodalies timetable before you choose.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum: what to know before you go

The museum is at Plaça Gala i Salvador Dalí 5, in the centre of Figueres. According to the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, tickets are sold online only: you receive a confirmation with a reservation code to show at the entrance. General admission was €18.50 and reduced admission €15 when we checked on 2 November 2026.

Outside July and August the museum opens Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays, with a few exceptional openings that the Foundation lists on its page; in July and August it opens every day. Access ends 45 minutes before closing time, so a late train can cost you the visit. It is closed on 1 January and 25 December.

By train: how to plan the day

  • Buy the museum ticket first, for a time that leaves a margin after your train arrives.
  • If you arrive at Figueres-Vilafant, add the transfer into town to your plan.
  • On the R11 you arrive in town and can walk to the museum; check the return times before you set off, as regional services are less frequent in the evening.
  • Girona is on the same line, which makes Figueres and Girona a natural pair for one long day.

With a driver: when it makes sense

A private car with a driver takes you from your hotel to the museum area and back without changes, and can add Girona on the way home. QuickPickups, which publishes this guide, sells this service; its booking box is clearly marked on this page, and there is a ready-made route to Girona and Figueres with a driver who waits at each stop. The driver is not an official guide, and museum tickets are not included: you buy them on the official site.

It suits families with children, small groups who would otherwise buy several train tickets, and anyone who wants to fit Figueres and Girona into one day without watching the timetable. If you are carrying on across the border afterwards, Barcelona to France Transfers is QuickPickups’ own site for those journeys.
