Airport

A layover at Barcelona airport: is there time to see the city?

El Prat is only about 20 minutes by road from the city centre, so a long layover can become a few hours in Barcelona. Whether it is worth it depends on the time between flights, your passport, your luggage and which terminal you fly out of. Here is how to work it out.

How much time you really need

Count backwards from your next flight: the time your airline asks you to be at the airport, security and, if you leave the Schengen area, passport control. Then add the trip out and back, and the time it takes to leave the airport after landing. Our rule of thumb: with less than about six hours between landing and the next departure, a visit to the centre is rarely worth the stress.

If you leave the airport you go through passport control on arrival (for flights from outside the Schengen area) and through security again on your way back in. On separate tickets you also have to collect and re-check your bags.

What to see in a few hours

  • Plaça de Catalunya, La Rambla and the Gothic Quarter: all within walking distance of the Aerobús stop.
  • The Sagrada Família: book a timed ticket online and check that you will have time to get back.
  • Passeig de Gràcia and Casa Batlló and La Pedrera, one stop from Plaça de Catalunya.
  • For a longer layover in the evening, see the airport at night for the last connections.

Luggage and terminals

Do not drag a suitcase around the city. If you cannot check it through, look on Aena’s airport page for the left-luggage service in your terminal and its current hours, or see our guide to luggage on your last day. Check which terminal your next flight leaves from: T1 and T2 are several kilometres apart; see T1 or T2.

A car there and back

When time is short, a car from the terminal to one sight and back is the most predictable option. QuickPickups, which publishes this guide, sells private transfers at a fixed price agreed when you book; its booking box is marked on this page. Book the return as a second trip, with a margin for traffic and security.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave Barcelona airport during a layover?

Yes, if your passport and visa allow you to enter Spain. Flights from outside the Schengen area go through passport control, and you pass security again when you come back.

How long does it take to get from the airport to the centre?

The Aerobús takes 30 to 35 minutes to Plaça de Catalunya. By road, about 21 minutes without traffic.

Is a six-hour layover enough to see Barcelona?

For a short walk around the centre, usually yes, if your next flight is on time and you do not need to collect bags. With less time, it is rarely worth it.

Does the Aerobús run at night?

Yes. According to Aerobús, it runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
