First, the luggage question
If you plan to visit the Sagrada Família on the day you arrive, sort out your bags first. The basilica’s official FAQs say it has no lockers for suitcases; the only lockers are for bags and rucksacks during the tower visit, because bags are not allowed in the towers. Every bag is checked at the entrance, and the basilica recommends not bringing rucksacks at all to speed up security.
So there are two sensible plans: go to your hotel first and drop the bags (most hotels will hold luggage before check-in), or use a luggage storage service in the city. Arriving at the entrance with a large suitcase is the one plan to avoid. Remember too that tickets are sold only online, so book a time slot that leaves room for the journey and the drop-off.
The options at a glance
| Option | Route | Changes | Typical time | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metro | L9 Sud to Collblanc, then L5 to Sagrada Família | One | 50–60 min | Airport ticket or Hola Barcelona; see TMB |
| Aerobús + metro | Aerobús to Plaça Universitat, then L2 to Sagrada Família | One | 45–60 min | Aerobús fare plus a metro ticket; see each operator |
| Train + metro (from T2) | R2 Nord to Passeig de Gràcia, then L2 to Sagrada Família | One | 40–55 min | Rodalies fare; see the official site |
| Official taxi | Rank outside arrivals, straight there | None | 30–45 min | Metered AMB fare; €21 minimum from the airport |
| Private transfer | Driver meets you in arrivals, straight there | None | 30–45 min | Fixed price agreed when booking |
Times are estimates for a typical day, including walking and waiting at the change, and do not include time to drop luggage. The Sagrada Família is on the other side of the city from the airport, so allow more at rush hour.
By metro: L9 Sud and L5
This is the only all-metro route and needs just one change. Take L9 Sud from the Aeroport T1 or Aeroport T2 station and get off at Collblanc, then change to L5 (blue line) towards Vall d’Hebron and ride it to Sagrada Família. TMB gives about 30 minutes on L9 Sud and a train roughly every 7 minutes.
You need the right ticket. At the airport stations, the single ticket and the T-casual are not valid: buy the Airport ticket or use a Hola Barcelona travel card. The Airport ticket is a single journey that is valid until you leave the metro, so the change at Collblanc is included. The interchange involves corridors and some stairs, which is fine with a cabin bag and tiring with two suitcases.
By Aerobús and L2
The Aerobús A1 (from T1) and A2 (from T2) stop at Plaça Universitat on the way into the city. From Universitat, metro L2 (purple line) runs directly to Sagrada Família. This route is a good choice if you want the luggage space of the bus for the longest stretch and only a short metro ride at the end.
Two practical points. The Aerobús fare and the metro ticket are separate, so you pay twice; check the official Aerobús fares and the TMB fares. And Plaça Universitat is a drop-off stop only in the airport-to-city direction: on the way back to the airport, catch the Aerobús at Plaça de Catalunya instead.
By train from T2: R2 Nord and L2
If you land at Terminal 2, the R2 Nord commuter train runs from the station next to the terminal to Passeig de Gràcia, where you change to L2 for Sagrada Família, two stops away. Trains on the airport branch run about every 30 minutes, so check the timetable to avoid a long wait. From Terminal 1, add the free shuttle bus to T2 first, which Aena times at about 10 minutes plus the wait.
By road: taxi or private transfer
By road the basilica is roughly 16 km from the airport, across the city. The black-and-yellow taxis wait at the ranks outside arrivals and charge the metered fare set by the AMB: for 2026, €1.35 per km on weekdays from 8:00 to 20:00 (T-1), €1.66 per km at night, on Saturdays and on public holidays (T-2), plus a €4.60 airport supplement, with a minimum of €21 for journeys from the airport. Traffic on the ring roads and the Eixample at rush hour is what usually makes the difference in time.
A pre-booked private transfer covers the same route at a price agreed in advance, with the driver meeting you in arrivals. For a group, a family with children or anyone with heavy luggage it can also solve the bag problem: go to your hotel first, drop the luggage, and continue to the basilica on foot or by metro.
Getting off at the right side of the basilica
The Sagrada Família metro station has exits on both sides of the basilica. According to the basilica’s visitor information, individual visitors use the general entrance on the Nativity façade, on Carrer de la Marina, and groups use the group entrance on the same street. Buses 19, 33, 34, D50, H10 and B24 also stop nearby.
If you arrive by car, the driver will normally drop you as close as traffic allows on one of the surrounding streets; the area is busy with coaches and pedestrians, so agree the drop-off point beforehand.
Our suggestion
- Light luggage and a ticket for later in the day: metro L9 Sud and L5, or the Aerobús and L2.
- Landing at T2 and staying in the Eixample: R2 Nord to Passeig de Gràcia, then L2.
- Heavy bags, children, a group or a tight ticket slot: go by road, ideally to your hotel first.
For the broader picture of getting into the city, see every option from the airport to the centre, and if you are flying into T1 or T2, check which transport leaves from your terminal.
