The short answer
The simplest way is the Aerobús: one bus from the terminal to Plaça de Catalunya, with no changes and room for large suitcases. By train, the R2 Nord from Terminal 2 gets you to Passeig de Gràcia, a short walk or one metro stop away. By metro you need one change. At night, the night buses run to Plaça de Catalunya. Door to door, a taxi or a pre-booked car avoids the last stretch on foot.
Which one suits you depends on your terminal, the time you land, how much luggage you have and how close your hotel is to the square. The table below puts the options side by side.
The options at a glance
| Option | Route | Changes | Typical time | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aerobús A1 / A2 | Straight to Plaça de Catalunya | None | 30–35 min | Large suitcases, hotels around the square |
| Train R2 Nord (T2 only) | To Passeig de Gràcia, then walk or metro | None or one | 25–40 min | Arriving at T2, light luggage |
| Metro L9 Sud | Change at Torrassa to L1, or at Zona Universitària to L3 | One | 45–60 min | Light luggage, a metro ticket |
| Night bus N17 / N18 | Straight to Plaça de Catalunya, after midnight | None | Varies | Late arrivals |
| Official taxi | Rank outside arrivals | None | 25–40 min | One to four people |
| Private transfer | Driver meets you in arrivals | None | 25–40 min | Families, groups, lots of luggage |

Aerobús: straight to the square
The Aerobús has two lines: A1, from Terminal 1, and A2, from Terminal 2 (stops T2B and T2C). In the direction of the city they stop at Plaça d’Espanya, Gran Via–Borrell, Plaça Universitat and Plaça de Catalunya, which is the last stop. The operator gives 30 to 35 minutes for the journey, and the service runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
It has space for large suitcases and pushchairs, and children under four travel free. It does not stop at Sants station. We could not read the current fare on the operator’s site in a verifiable way, so check the official fares before you travel, and buy only on the official site or at the stops.
By train from Terminal 2
The R2 Nord runs from the station next to Terminal 2 and stops at Barcelona Sants and Passeig de Gràcia, with a train every 30 minutes on the airport branch. Passeig de Gràcia is one metro stop from Plaça de Catalunya on line L3, or a short walk up the avenue. If you land at Terminal 1, you need to take the free shuttle bus to Terminal 2 first, which Aena times at around ten minutes.
Check the timetable for the first and last trains. It is a good option if your hotel is in the Eixample, but with big suitcases the stairs and the walk can wear you out.
By metro: L9 Sud and a change
Line L9 Sud has a station in each terminal, with a train about every 7 minutes, according to TMB. It does not reach the centre, so you change: at Torrassa to L1, which stops at Plaça de Catalunya, or at Zona Universitària to L3, which also stops there. You also need the right ticket: the single ticket and the T-casual are not valid at the airport stations, so buy the Airport ticket or use a Hola Barcelona card.
From Plaça de Catalunya, L3 serves Liceu and Drassanes, along La Rambla, which is useful if your hotel is on the lower part.
After midnight: the night buses
Aena lists two night buses that run to Plaça de Catalunya: the N17, from Terminal 1, and the N18, from Terminals 1 and 2. Times and frequencies change by season, so check the NitBus page and our guide to arriving at the airport at night.
Taxi or pre-booked car
The official black-and-yellow taxis wait at ranks outside both terminals and charge the metered AMB fare; see taxi from Barcelona airport for how the fare is built. A pre-booked private transfer follows the same route at a price agreed in advance, and the driver meets you in arrivals. With La Rambla and the Gothic Quarter, remember that some streets are pedestrianised or restricted to traffic, so the driver may drop you at the nearest point the rules allow and you walk the last few minutes; give your hotel’s exact address and, if you can, ask the hotel how it prefers guests to arrive.
Our suggestion
- Big suitcases and a hotel around the square: Aerobús.
- T2, light luggage and a hotel in the Eixample: R2 Nord to Passeig de Gràcia.
- Landing after midnight: the N17 or N18, or a taxi or pre-booked car.
- A family, a group or a lot of luggage: a pre-booked car, which avoids the last stretch on foot.

Booking a private transfer: the usual questions
- Is the price really fixed?
- Yes. You see the full price for the vehicle before you pay, and it does not change with traffic, the route or the time of day.
- What if my flight is late?
- Your flight number is tracked in real time and the pick-up time is adjusted. At the airport you get 60 minutes of free waiting after landing; at the cruise port, 30 minutes.
- How will I find the driver?
- At the airport the driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. Your confirmation email has the contact details.
- Can I get child seats?

- Can I get an invoice?
- Yes. QUICKPICKUPS S.L. can issue an invoice for your booking, including one made out to your company.
- What if my plans change?
- Cancellations made more than 24 hours in advance are free. You can manage the booking from your confirmation email or by writing to [email protected].
