Barcelona airport with kids and car seats

Travelling with small children turns the airport-to-hotel journey into a logistics exercise: pushchairs, car seats, tired kids and more luggage than usual. Here is what Spanish traffic law actually says about child seats, how each type of transport handles families, and how to choose.

What the law says about child seats in Spain

The rules are in Spain’s General Traffic Regulations, published in the BOE. Article 117 says that children whose height is 135 cm or less must use an approved child restraint system suited to their height and weight, and must normally sit in the rear seats. They may sit in the front only in specific cases, such as when the vehicle has no rear seats or the rear seats are already taken by other children, and always with a suitable restraint.

Article 119 includes an exemption that matters for families arriving at the airport: when taxis are driving in urban traffic or in the urban areas of large cities, they may carry passengers under 135 cm without a child restraint, as long as the child sits in a rear seat. The exemption is written for taxis specifically. The article was amended with effect from 1 October 2026, so if this point is decisive for you, read the current consolidated text on the BOE.

Being legally allowed is not the same as being the safest option. Many parents prefer a proper seat for a baby or toddler on a motorway journey such as the one from the airport, which uses the ring roads and dual carriageways. That is a personal decision; the information here is to help you make it.

Aerobús with children

The Aerobús is the most family-friendly public option for getting into the centre. According to the operator’s FAQs, the buses have reserved space for wheelchairs, pushchairs and large luggage, and children under 4 travel free. The lines run from both terminals to Plaça d’Espanya, Plaça Universitat and Plaça de Catalunya in about 30 to 35 minutes, 24 hours a day.

The practical question is the final stretch from the stop to your hotel. With a pushchair, two suitcases and a tired child, even a ten-minute walk can feel long, so look at the distance on a map before you fly.

Metro with a pushchair

Metro L9 Sud stations at the airport are modern and accessible, and TMB runs trains about every 7 minutes. The difficulty comes later: L9 Sud does not reach the centre, so you will change lines at Torrassa, Collblanc or Zona Universitària, and some interchanges involve long corridors. It works well with a light folding pushchair and one bag per adult, less so with a family’s worth of luggage. Remember that the T-casual is not valid at the airport stations; buy the Airport ticket or a Hola Barcelona card.

Taxi with children

Barcelona’s official taxis wait at the ranks outside both terminals. Under the exemption described above, a taxi in urban traffic can carry a child under 135 cm in the back without a child seat; some taxis do carry a booster or a seat, but you cannot count on finding one at the rank. If you want a seat, the options are to bring your own (many airlines let you check it in free or at a reduced cost, check with yours) or to book a vehicle that provides one.

Fares are metered under the AMB rules: for 2026, €1.35 per km on weekdays from 8:00 to 20:00 and €1.66 per km at other times, plus the €4.60 airport supplement, with a €21 minimum from the airport. A family of five or more needs a larger vehicle, which carries an extra €4.60 supplement.

Private transfer with child seats

With a pre-booked private transfer you can ask for the seats you need when you book, and the driver fits them before you arrive at the car. QuickPickups, which publishes this guide, offers child and booster seats on request for a supplement shown before you pay; its booking box is marked on this page. Tell them the age or weight of each child so the right seat is brought.

This is the option that removes most of the variables on arrival: the price is fixed, the driver tracks your flight and waits in arrivals, and a larger vehicle can carry a family of five or six with the pushchair and suitcases. It is also the one that makes most sense if you land late at night with sleeping children (see arriving at night).

A checklist for arriving with children

  • Decide on the seat question before you fly: bring your own, book one, or rely on the taxi exemption.
  • If you bring a car seat, check your airline’s rules for checking it in and whether it is approved for use on board.
  • Keep snacks, a change of clothes and anything the children need for the first hour in your hand luggage.
  • Check your terminal: if you land at T1 and planned the train, the shuttle adds 15 minutes.
  • If you have a lot of luggage as well as children, see travelling with lots of luggage or a group.
